Wikipedia wpisuje się w nurt tworzenia wolnych i otwartych treści, zainspirowany działaniami informatyków tworzących oprogramowanie wolne i o otwartym kodzie źródłowym (FLOSS). Jak w wypadku wielu tego typu projektów, otwartość internetowej encyklopedii zaowocowała szybkim wzrostem. W ciągu pięciu lat Wikipedia przyciągnęła dziesiątki tysięcy autorów i redaktorów, którzy stworzyli ponad trzy miliony haseł w 100 językach. Nieproporcjonalnie duża część pracy jest wykonywana przez stosunkowo niewielką grupę 4500 osób, z których 1850 pracuje nad wersją angielską.
