[edit] Political Views
Hashimi's party represented the largest Sunni block in parliament after the 2005 election. Hashimi opposes federalism, wants oil revenues distributed based on population, de-Baathification reversed and more Sunnis in the new military and police.[2]
USA Today reported in December 2006 that Hashimi was involved in forming a multi-sectarian alliance to replace the government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, with the encouragement of U.S. President George W. Bush, Muqtada al-Sadr.[3]
[edit] Attitude towards US
In a December 2006 discussion with Vice President Tariq Al-Hashimi he differentiated between "what the US is calling an insurgency and what "[the Iraqis] call...resistance. [The second group, not al Qaeda] are very much prepared to contribute and to participate in the political process as long as we offer to them doable, a workable, a significant project to accommodate them." In the same discussion, he said violence in Iraq was a function of the American military presece there and that all would calm if the US set a timetable for withdrawal.[4]
In 2007, Hashimi announced plans to pull his political bloc out of the government -- and resign as vice-president -- on May 15 if promised constitutional changes were not made.[5]
